Student Devices and Summer Learning

As we wrap up the school year, it’s important that all students and families are aware of the expectations for APS issued devices over the summer. Whether your student is moving to a new school, continuing within APS, or attending summer school, please review the guidelines below carefully to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any unexpected charges for missing or damaged equipment.

Students Withdrawing from APSANY student not returning to APS in the 2025-2026 school year should return their iPad AND charger to the school ITC or Technician.

8th Grade Students Attending an APS High School – 8th graders attending an APS high school in the 2025 – 2026 school year should take their APS issued iPad and charger home for the summer. These students will exchange their iPad and charger for a MacBook and charger. Please look for information from the HS your student will attend in the fall or APS as to when HS device distribution will begin. Failure to bring the MS device to be exchanged can result in being billed for the missing device. *Students attending TJJHST (Thomas Jefferson HS of Science and Technology) should return their iPad and charger to the school ITC or Technician.*

6th and 7th Grade Returning Students – All students returning to Gunston for the 2025 – 2026 school year should take their device home for the summer. Students attending Summer School will use their APS issued device for the summer. Families can possibly be billed for any damaged or lost devices. Tech support is available but limited over the summer months.

Please keep in mind that:

  • Students enrolled in summer school programs must take their devices home to use during summer school and return them on the first day of school.
  • Students registered in the Summer Skills Boost Program, an asynchronous virtual program, will take their iPad and charger home over the summer.
  • Current fifth and eighth-grade students should also hold onto their devices over the summer and exchange them for new devices at their middle or high school.

If you have any questions, please call your school or contact APS at 703-228-8000 option 5.
